MCBH Library Through the Years

Where stories come to life

Ditching Dewey

Beginning in 2018, MCBH Library began to move away from the Dewey Decimal System of classification to a more user-friendly system.  Semper FindIt is a cataloging system that organizes books into thematic categories, allowing users to navigate through layers of topics efficiently. Unlike the Dewey Decimal System, Semper FindIt offers a more intuitive approach to book discovery, emphasizing thematic relevance over rigid classification. This user-friendly system aims to enhance the exploration of literature, providing patrons with a more enriching and seamless browsing experience.

The transition to Semper FindIt took two years to complete and involved reclassifying and relabeling every item in the library.

How to Semper FindIt

  1. Identify the major category, which is referred to as "neighborhoods" within the system.
  2. Determine the subcategories within the major category.
  3. Within the chosen subcategory, identify additional relevant subcategories using the translation key.
  4. Further refine the subcategory using the translation key.
  5. Truncate the author's name to five characters.
  6. Note the publication date.
  7. Determine if there is volume information applicable to the item.
