MCBH Library Through the Years

Where stories come to life

Where it all Started

The Mōkapu peninsula, where the MCBH library now resides, was once the site of a royal retreat for King Kamehameha, his Ali‘i (chiefs), a royal fishpond, and an early Hawaiian burial ground.

In 1918, the military developed the Kuwaaohe Military Reservation, which was later named Fort Hase. In 1939, the Navy began construction of Naval Air Station, Kaneohe. In 1941, Facility 219 was built as the base’s recreational facility, and where the library now resides.
