MCBH Library Through the Years

Where stories come to life

Transforming Space and Experience

In 2014, the library underwent a transformative remodel with a clear goal: to create a welcoming environment that would draw people in and encourage them to linger. Prior to the remodel, the atmosphere was described as unwelcoming, marked by locking CD cabinets, stern signage enforcing rules, and a cramped layout dictated by headquarters.

The redesign aimed to counteract this atmosphere by prioritizing inclusivity and community engagement. The focus shifted from merely offering trendy programs to fostering a space where patrons felt genuinely welcomed and comfortable. Recognizing that a warm and inviting environment is just as crucial as program offerings, the remodel emphasized the importance of approachable staff and a layout conducive to interaction.

Gone were the days of rigidly defined sections and intimidating rules. Instead, the remodel embraced openness and flexibility. The imposition of a mandated "young adult section" gave way to a more fluid arrangement that encouraged exploration. Shelving was rearranged to maximize natural light, and modular walls were replaced with more inviting spaces for study and collaboration.

The result? A library that not only boasts a vibrant array of programs but also serves as a hub for community connection—a space where individuals feel encouraged to explore, learn, and engage.

Before, After, and Now

Previously characterized by rigid regulations, locked cabinets, and stern signage, our space has evolved into a welcoming environment where barriers are removed and inclusivity thrives. With a shift towards openness and accessibility, we invite all to explore and engage freely within the space as we strive to foster a sense of community and connection.
