3D Printing for Beginners: 3D Printing at the Makerspace Room

As we continue to learn more about 3D printing through our own experiences and with the help of Marines knowledgeable in this field, we have created this guide to help those looking for a quick starting point.

  • Sign-in to use the Makerspace room
  • Place a request
  • Submit an inquiry

Safety First!

Safety and Equipment maintenance

Practice caution at all times due to the high temperatures of the nozzle and the bed

Familiarize yourself with the parts of the 3D printer especially parts that get hot

Do not leave the machine unattended

Know your tools and materials

Download and print replacements parts if applicable for future repairs

Regularly calibrate machines

► Develop regular safety and maintenance habits to prolong the machine’s life

3D Printing Policies

Workflow

  1. Submit a Request Form along with your 3D printing filament (as needed) and the design in .STL format either in-person or through this FORM.
  2. A Library staff member will contact you for confirmation (e.g. approved, disapproved, for further deliberation, etc.)
  3. Once the request is approved and finalized, the Library staff will set a schedule for the print job.
  4. Upon completion of the print job, you will be contacted by the Library staff for pick up.
  5. Pick up the item at the Makerspace room.

General Policies and Guidelines

  • An accomplished and approved Request Form is always required prior to a print job.
  • The Library can only accommodate registered patrons or patrons who are eligible to register for an account.
  • Only the Library staff members are allowed to initiate the print.
  • Print jobs will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis. 
  • Print jobs are limited to no more than eight hours per component.
  • Filament shall be provided by the patrons should the request exceed the limitations.
  • Please allow 1 week after approval and confirmation of your request for completion
  • Only 1 request per week per patron shall be allowed.
  • Colors and materials offered shall depend on their availability at the Makerspace.
  • Any exceptions or special considerations requested by an office would have to be approved by the Library staff.

Restrictions and Prohibitions

  • Patrons are prohibited from operating the 3D printers without taking our Introduction to 3D Printing class and signing the User Agreement Form.
  • Print material is limited to PLA.
  • Items characterized by, but not limited, to the following shall be prohibited:
    • Destructive to facilities and equipment
    • Illegal, fraudulent, obscene, offensive or otherwise malicious
    • Weapons, and parts that could be used to construct a weapon
    • For personal or commercial financial gain
    • Copyrighted
    • Safety hazard
