Pets Picture Books

Furry, feathery or scaly, pets are amazing! Our library has a wide variety of books on pets, from books on taking care of real pets to stories about mythical ones.

To find books on pets in children's nonfiction, look on the nonfiction shelves for call numbers beginning with J PETS. They're sorted by pet type: cats, dogs, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc.

For picture books, use this list. We've used the same sorting principles as the nonfiction books, beginning with dogs and cats. Since there were so few frog, lizard, turtle or snake books, we combined reptiles and amphibians, the same way the NATURE neighborhood does; similarly, we combined rodents and fish into Other Small. Most other large animals, as long as they were real, fell under Other - large. If a creature is one kind of pet but being treated as another kind, it falls into the pet's actual species (for instance, A Unicorn Named Sparkle is actually about a goat, so it falls into Other - Large.)

We've also included a few sections that aren't covered in Semper FindIt:

Fantasy and Impossible Pets covers mythological creatures and dinosaurs - living things that either ceased to exist before humans began to exist or never existed in the first place.

Pets That Are Things covers either objects being treated as pets (e.g. the balloon in Spencer's New Pet) or normally inanimate objects and vehicles being treated as pets for purposes of the story.

Grieving is independent of species. Sometimes we lose our pets, but these books are here to help as cope and move forward. Nobody wants to trip over a sad book by accident, so this box is located at the very bottom.

It's time to pick your pet book - enjoy!
