Frequently Asked Questions

What type of 3D printer does the MCBH Library use?

The MCBH Library uses a Lulzbot Taz Pro 3D printer.

What type of filament does your printer use?

We use Polylactic Acid filament, more commonly known as PLA.  It is recyclable and made from renewable resources.

Are the things we print safe to use for food?

No. Items printed from the MCBH 3D printer are not considered safe to use for food.  For more information about food safe 3D printing, visit this site: https://formlabs.com/blog/guide-to-food-safe-3d-printing/

Does your 3D printer print in high detail?

The MCBH 3D printer cannot print in extremely high detail on small objects.  If you are interested in printing in high detail, please contact us for more information.

Can I submit a design that I made myself?

Yes, you can submit a print file that you designed yourself.  It must still meet all of the MCBH Library requirements for printing approval, such as size and time limits.  Visit the MCBH 3D Printer Basics tab for rules and requirements for printing approval.

How do I know if my print will take less than 8 hours?

The length of time it takes to print a file is dependent on several factors, include size, infill, detail, supports, and shape.  We cannot know exactly how long a print will take until we have loaded the file into our program.  A staff member will communicate with you if your file does not meet our time requirement.  See the Print Menu tab for examples of files that print in 8 hours or less.

Can I print something that has multiple files that fit together into one design?

Yes, you may submit a design that contains multiple files.  Each file can be printed separately in different colors.  However, only one file can be printed per week.  A design using multiple files may take several weeks to complete.  Se the Print Menu tab for examples of designs using multiple files.

How do I pick up my completed print?

When your print is complete, you will receive an email from the MCBH Library.  You will have 7 days to pick up the print.  Stop by the front desk and let us know that you are here to pick up your 3D print and the name provided when it was submitted.  We will bring it out to you.
